Chinese Mitten Crab

The mitten crab was first reported in Europe in 1912 in the Elbe River in Germany. Probably these animals hitch-hiked as larvae in the ballast tanks of ships from Asia. The larvae are then together with the ballast water discharged into the German rivers. From here the species has spread over Europe. In the Netherlands the species is now found along all major waters, both fresh, brackish and salt water and can survive very well under bad conditions. In England they were first found in 1935. Now the “woolen crabs” have been spotted in Southern parts of Europe and is even seen on American coasts.
The mitten crab is a delicacy in Chinese cuisine and is mostly eaten by Chinese.
