Cockles

Various species of cockles live in sandy, sheltered beaches throughout the world. The distinctive rounded shells of cockles are bilaterally symmetrical, and are heart-shaped when viewed from the end.
The shell has three apertures (inhalant, exhalant, and pedal) for siphoning water and for the foot to protrude. Cockles typically burrow using the foot, and feed by filtering plankton from the surrounding water. Cockles are capable of "jumping" by bending and straightening the foot.

Cockles are among the infauna and life of the intertidal to a depth of about 15 meters. An optimal habitat is the intertidal of the Wadden Sea and large beach plains .Clams are most common in the sand which is not too fine or too muddy , in areas with moderate current. They live close to the surface of the sand, with only the two siphons protrude above the sand

The cockle filters the water and feeds on plankton and other food floating in the water . Cockle is one of the most common species on the Dutch and Belgian coast and is very common especially in the Wadden Sea.  Cockles are widely eaten . In Spain Cockles are also incorporated into the paella and other dishes . Cockles are often canned and are a true delicacy .

Partly due to the environmentally friendly fishing techniques our deserve cockles the “Waddengold” predicate.
